A small but intriguing local museum, the Franklin Gem and Mineral Museum contains examples of beautiful, rare and bizarre gems, minerals, fossils and more found both in North Carolina and in other places around the world. Thousands of items are shown in the multitude of display cases, including a 2.25-pound ruby, fluorescent cabochons, a large ammonite and more. Located inside the old jail in downtown, the museum is close to the Scottish Tartans Museum and the Macon County Historical Museum.
